If you are a wine lover, don’t miss this gem hidden in the basement of the Stockhorn Grill in the Rex Hotel. The room feels like a tasting room in a small winery with a bar that seats 4 and about 10 2top tables. The night we visited we were the only customers for the 1.5 hours we were there. Our host/sommelier was a young Italian man who had an incredible knowledge of wine, was a trained sommelier and had spent time working as a winemaker in Italy, France and Australia. He was extremely friendly and conveyed his extensive knowledge of wine in an approachable and entertaining way in excellent English! They have a tremendous selection of wines available by the glass because they pour using a Couvinet system that extracts the wine from the bottle without removing the cork. That allows them to “open” many bottles for wine sampling and by the glass offerings without much spoilage. Our young Italian somm guided us through a sample of 3-4 wines before letting us choose the ones we wanted to have by the glass. They also offer small appetizers/ tasting portions, but we only had the wine. I highly recommend checking this gem out. Price per person: CHF 30–40 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Weinzeit Bar in Zermatt has a charming idea with its surprise menu: the kind of concept that makes you feel like you’re signing up for a little culinary adventure. The reality, though, was a bit uneven. Our five courses stretched to nearly three hours, which felt more meditative than intended. There were some real highlights. The mushroom croquette and the chicken soup were absolutely outstanding: the sort of dishes that make you stop mid‑sentence. And the house‑baked bread was genuinely delicious. But the magic didn’t hold all the way through. The lamb main was unfortunately very chewy, and the dessert didn’t redeem things either. French toast as a finale felt more breakfast than “grand ending,” and ours was burned on the bottom, leaving a bitter aftertaste. Overall, the concept is fun, but the experience feels overpriced for what it is. With a surprise menu, you might walk out delighted or, like us, a little disappointed - though still thinking fondly about that croquette. Price per person: CHF 100+ Food: 3 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4

We enjoyed the 6 course tasting on Friday for 105 CHF, the food was beautifully prepared with a Norwegian flair that meant we left every plate clean. The duck hearts were lacking a bit of acid but the salsify was a standout dishlike a healthy mozzarella stick. The sous vide trout was really fantastic and the cote du bouef as well, though that would’ve benefitted from some wood grill char. Unfortunately the wines by the glass didn’t have a menu, so while they were nicely paired to our preference, the price was not shared until the bill at the endwhere we learned they were 2-3x more expensive compared to the by the glass prices upstairs. It kind of left the night on a sour note having been charged 24 CHF per glass without knowing.
