Un posto con alto potenziale ma che, sfortunatamente, non viene curato a dovere. La sala interna, ricavata all'interno dei sassi, avrebbe bisogno di qualche attenzione e cura in più. Il menù offre scelta e la qualità è esattamente quello che c'è da aspettarsi da un posto che si chiama "trattoria popolare", quindi senza infamia e senza lode. I dolci sono tutti confezionati e non hanno nulla di artigianale: abbiamo ordinato un tiramisù che era al pari di una merendina da supermercato (ma pagato 7 euro!). Qualità/prezzo non coerente, a mio parere, in quanto il conto è stato un po' alto rispetto a quanto e come abbiamo mangiato. Food: 3 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3

This, for sure, was one of the coolest places we dined at while in Italy! If you're familiar with the history of Matera, you know all about the ancient caves that early residents used as their homes. Many of those caves have now been turned into restaurants or other businesses. Trattoria Popolare Matera is located in one of these caves in Matera’s famous Sassi district. Built directly into the limestone rock, it offers a charm that feels both ancient and authentic. The interior lighting creates a very unique and relaxing atmosphere. They serve traditional dishes from the Basilicata region. All the ingredients are local, and while the dishes are simple, they are delicious. Our group of six ordered different dishes, and everyone was happy with their food. Our server was fantastic—I mean fantastic! He took care of our difficult table and had a wonderful sense of humor throughout. In the end, we ended up chatting with him for ten minutes outside as we were leaving, and they were beginning to close for the night. We had great food, wonderful service, and a fantastic time. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: €20–30 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Vegetarian options: Several vegetarian options are available on the menu.
