Nestled in Zürcher Hauptbahnof (the city’s major train station, think Grand Central) is The Counter, a 2-star Michelin restaurant offering its spin of German dishes with an homage to Japanese elements, which are seen throughout the 12-course dining progression. They had a Norwegian scallop dish with dashi broth that was nostalgic of my first bite of luscious crustacean at the age of 7–but the scallop from this region tasted significantly different than scallops I’ve had before; it was sweet, lush, and nutty. Another notable dish was their take on the Beinenstich kuchen (bee sting cake) which they transformed into a cream sandwich with orange and thyme serving as the pronounced flavors of the dessert. The crunchy almond brittle exterior with the center layer of brightly flavored cream was reminiscent of eating sans rival. Wine pairings attributed to the beautiful concerto of the dinner, starting with a light-bodied champagne, then showcasing rare wines from Northern Switzerland and Southern Germany, and Spain. I love their hearty, boisterous group welcome of “Salut” when you begin this shared adventure with the staff. Throughout the night, I was mesmerized by the entire flow of the staff as one cohesive unit; operationally, it was truly an art form. This firsthand experience at bar seating and the tingling of all 5 senses as you witness your food being prepared transitioning to the consumption of each effervescent bite was like my dining experience at Jônt, another 2-star Michelin restaurant in Washington, D.C. Mixed feelings about this one. Service was excellent, but food was okay. It wasn't bad, don't get me wrong. The food was just not very special and there wasn't anything extraordinary (compared to other gourmet restaurants). We had very high expectations but we were a bit disappointed.
