Orwell’s iconic classic ‘Down and out in Paris and London’ is relevant even today. Down and out in Zurich is less conceivable but to my astonishment, exuberantly extant - I never knew! One can experience the feel on Langstrasse, but I’m told it will disappear within the next 10 years as the developers and muddling middle class move in. Too bad!! For here one can find equally colourful though sometimes sadly debauched characters who at least don’t look like they’ve given up on life or become resigned to the status quo. They were among the spectacular I have ever seen. On the same street, Roter Delfin with its Dayglo Red and Blue interior, relaxed ambience but its Swiss veneer is a trip down the rabbit hole. I went there after a Topjaw (Instagram) recommendation. The place not only lived up to their hype but went beyond it. The toast: their own recipe, is cut thick and grilled - possibly over a coal fire like my heavenly grandmother used to do, with a fire fork - unfortunately, I forgot to ask them if they had copied her trick. Cutting it thick somehow made it fluffier, something she would have applauded. The texture therefore and taste are just as good but rarer, than the best of toasted Brioches and without the butter. This (the butter) was whipped and served on the side giving Vegans another reason to be happy. The concept (alongside the toast) is small plates, not one of which, wouldn’t have been out of place in the finest of fine dining restaurants. With the first offering of toast was a plate of perfectly cooked rhubarb, the other a fennel salad with I think feta, lemon olive oil and fennel seeds. Already, I was getting full but then came more. The Beef, possibly feather blade, with Puree and red wine sauce that was sooooo good that despite being full and having already, greedily eaten all of the toast on the first round, I used my finger to scoop up any remaining sauce and to prevent it being wasted in the dishwasher. In a nod to polite society, I refrained from my true wish, which would have been to lick the plate clean. There was another salad, possibly potato with possibly persillade topped with potato crisps which had the inhabitants of my microbiome singing the first refrain of Glory glory hallelujah. I might have gotten some of the details about the food wrong but what I didn’t get wrong was trying to give this place six google stars. That’s googles fault. Roter Delfin, Bravo, Felicitations, very well done, you add even more character to the street. Price per person: CHF 80–90 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
