Good, but very high price. And very questionable first courses... The pasta is completely tasteless, not tolerable if you want to be a high-quality restaurant. Three stars for the service which saves everything a little. Food: 3 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 3

I respect the audacity of the project, but we are very far from the goal. I don't save any dish, some too fatty, some savory, all dishes out of balance, the service is not so attentive but they are friendly Price per person: €100+ Food: 2 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 4

Difficult to find but well worth the search, Benso Bologna was the highlight of a town already ensconced on a high culinary plateau. We knew we were in good hands right off the bat with the amuse bouche, and we froze with excitement at the slight crunch emitted simply by grasping the first Sicilian bun of the bread course, which also featured a distinctive and delicious small loaf characteristic of Germany. As a panetteria alone, Benso would draw crowds here in our bread-mad native San Francisco. I believe the best way to test a chef is through their simpler classics, so I went straight at his pasta pomodoro. We were the first diners of the day and I thought I might catch him off guard. Instead it was I who walked into an intoxicating ambush. I was riddled with al dente penne propelled by concentrated dry red powder prepared days ago from a ripe tomato reduction. The pasta itself was perfumed with fragrant tomato leaves. The effect is to leave not only one diner but the whole table floating on a cloud of Sicilian tomato aroma. My only quibble was a slightly heavy hand with the salting, but that gave me an excuse to make a quick retreat back to the bread basket. The attentive servers grasp of English was less than fluent, but that deficiency really belongs to this American monolinguist. The decor was subtle disco moderne, which was fine but didn't quite resonate with the assured, articulate vibe the food gave me. The wine list and the meal in general is priced well below what Californians pay for this level of quality, which we believe comfortably warrant a Michelin star.
