We recently stayed at Hotel La Palma au Lac in Locarno, and while the experience had its charms, there were noticeable shortcomings that warrant a three-star rating. The hotel's prime location was the highlight of our stayānestled next to the picturesque lake, and conveniently close to both the train station and the bustling downtown area, our explorations around Locarno were effortless and enjoyable. The staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful, enhancing our overall experience. However, the hotel itself, including the lobby and the rooms, exuded an '80s vibe that felt unintentionally dated rather than charmingly retro. The rooms had basic laminated flooring, plain curtains, and simple white walls, with electrical features unaltered from a time when the fax machine was a novel technology. Modern amenities such as a master switch, USB chargers, or centralized climate control were notably absent, which are generally expected in a four-star property today. Additionally, the wall-mounted air conditioning unit was awkwardly installed beneath the former drapery, emitting sounds similar to a flock of ducks quacking intermittently throughout the night, even though it was completely turned off. The noise, while clearly noticeable in the quiet setting, was not loud enough to wake me up. The bathrooms, while spotlessly clean and functional, were also outdated. The shower setup included a high bathtub that required nearly acrobatic skills to enter, with a handle bars and a shower walls so awkwardly aligned with each other that seemed more like a safety hazard than a feature. The breakfast was a highlight in terms of quantity, offering a variety of continental options. However, the quality was mixed; the Challah and croissants were just slightly stale, and some of the fruits and some of the fruit juices did not seem fresh, yet still consumable. Although the breakfast was decent and met four-star standards, it wasn't outstanding and lacked non-continental options. Overall, with the right expectations for a stay that appreciates a retro touch over modern conveniences, Hotel La Palma au Lac is a fair choice. We would consider returning for the delightful location and warm hospitality, even though we find the lack of contemporary conveniences a drawback.
