We had high expectations as we've seen good reviews on it, but I had to take a second look at it because I couldn't believe this squeezed in restaurant would have such good ratings. First thought after seeing it was that the food would be bad and I was right. The food is all frozen. The lasagna looks like typical airplane food and feels like an insult to italian cuisine, the pizza could be sold as bread and would probably do better because the toppings are just not doing it. I deeply regret wasting a meal at this place when we only have so many limited chances to explore different dishes from different places. Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1

Quattro Platani in Varenna, Italy. As an avid food enthusiast, I was excited to sample authentic Italian cuisine. Little did I know that this restaurant would redefine my expectations—in all the wrong ways. The moment I saw the restaurant, I sensed something was amiss. And my gut feeling was completely right. The dimly lit dining area resembled a forgotten corner of someone’s basement while the walls were adorned with spider webs. While going to the restroom I passed a not so hidden refrigerator that was proudly displaying the words “pizza” as well as “lasagna” in permanent marker. Yes, an “italian” restaurant owning a refrigerator that contains frozen “italian” food. It was like a culinary cry for help. Let’s talk about the food—or lack thereof. The “homemade” lasagna arrived lukewarm, as if it had been thawed in the same refrigerator that bore its name. The layers were distinguishable since the lasagna only consisted of five layers, covered in a bland tomato sauce that wasn’t even red as it should be. According to the menu the lasagna includes beef but this ingredient was nowhere to be found. I tried one piece of the pizza and to be honest, the best part about it was the crust. The tomato sauce tasted sour as if they had used canned tomatoes. Furthermore, a crucial ingredient “oregano” was missing as well. Even after asking the service for some, they couldn’t provide as if they didn’t even have it in the kitchen. I contemplated life choices as I chewed on this abomination. My final thoughts are that “Quattro Platani” is a disgrace to Italy’s rich culinary heritage. If Michelangelo were alive, he’d carve a frowning emoji into the Colosseum. As I paid the bill (which included a “fridge fee”), I vowed never to speak of this experience again. Varenna (as well as italy) deserves better—much better. Price per person: €10–20 Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1
