I think my expectations were too high. Unfortunately, the taste wasn’t particularly special. For the price, the food was quite average. If I had to pick a standout dish, it would be the ceviche and the pork dish. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the live music was truly moving. Review: Cantina, Köchlistrasse 35, Zürich We visited Cantina for dinner after being recommended by the owners of Barranco. They suggested Cantina for a more authentic Peruvian food experience, as Barranco takes a fusion approach to Peruvian cuisine—which, by the way, I really enjoy. Having had Peruvian food several times in my life, I was expecting something straightforward, bold in flavor, and reasonably priced—as Peruvian cuisine often transforms humble ingredients like potatoes, corn, fresh fish, and inexpensive cuts of meat into something special through the use of peppers, condiments, and acidity, reflecting its unique Japanese, African, and Latin American influences. The evening started off well with two Pisco Sours and some snacks—empanadas and ceviche. The ceviche was delicious and definitely one of the highlights of the meal. However, the main dishes didn’t quite meet expectations: Corn Ribs (CHF 20.-) – The dish consisted of four small ribs, a spoonful of corn, and a very strong turmeric-acidic purée with spicy elements. While the flavors were good, it felt overpriced for what it was. Fish Anticuchos (CHF 29.-) – Made with swordfish, served with potatoes and corn. The fish was well-cooked, but the dish lacked something special—no real soul, no memorable depth of flavor. Two skewers and a handful of potato wedges for 29 francs felt underwhelming. Lomo Saltado (CHF 29.-) – This was the biggest disappointment. Traditionally, it should be a rich, umami-packed dish with peppers, onions, and a deeply flavorful sauce. Instead, what we got was scallions, pak choi, and microgreens over beef cubes, with a sauce that leaned mostly sour. It somewhat resembled a Lomo Saltado, but missed the mark entirely. The bill came to CHF 180.-, including three Pisco Sours (CHF 19.- each) and a bottle of water (CHF 10.-). While I don’t usually complain about Zürich restaurant prices, for this amount, I could have gone to Barranco instead, where I know I’d get high-quality fusion Peruvian food in a cool setting. Final Thoughts: Cantina falls short of what it aims to be. While both the service and food were good, it neither delivered a truly authentic Peruvian experience nor something distinct enough to stand on its own. Instead, it felt like it was trying to do a slightly different version of Barranco—but without the same level of execution. For a more authentic Peruvian experience, I’d recommend Puente instead. Rating: (3/5) – Good food and service, but not a must-return spot for me. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: CHF 90–100 Food: 2 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3
