Zvijezda. Or the Star in English. The only space in Zagreb that isn't a square but deserves to be exactly that. A square. Zvijezda is just a big intersection of several streets. Once, the city ended at Zvijezda, and it was the so-called "Mitnica" or border. Nowadays, it's practically the beginning of the city center. From heavy periphery to the very center – what miraculous destinies! This is accompanied by an interesting history. As it used to be the edge of the inhabited area of today's Zagreb, once two separate cities, Kaptol and Gradec, and the village of Nova Ves (today a street leading from Zvijezda to Kaptol), in the Middle Ages, this area was nothing less than an execution site, a place of execution for many unfortunate individuals – thieves, war prisoners, witches and wizards, and who knows who else. After all, its official name is Gupčeva Zvijezda because it's most likely where the leader of the largest European peasant revolt, Matija Gubec, was executed in 1573. Legend has it that it happened in St. Mark's Square in the center of Zagreb, in front of the church with the colorful roof, which is impossible because any execution within the city walls was then legally prohibited. Therefore, it could only be carried out in an official location designated for such activities – a Zvijezda. At Zvijezda, the Medveščak stream turned, and nearby stands the beautiful church of St. John the Baptist, erected on the foundations of the Church of St. Zacharias, the only true Templar church in this part of Europe. Here, so called the Illyrians gathered and fostered the Croatian national revival. The area between Zvijezda and nearby Ksaver gave birth to Croatian tourism at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries, and so on, and so forth. And just a little more... At Zvijezda there's a small café named Zvijezda but locals called it Vuglec (meaning the corner) because of its placement. Right on the corner of Zvijezda and Antun Vrančić Street. Nota bene, the Antun Vrančić was uncle of the genius Faust Vrančić and perhaps the most powerful Croatian politician of all time, the Chancellor of the Habsburg Monarchy at its peak. But about Café Zvijezda or Vuglec. Exactly across from the taxi stand is Vuglec. Its origin is unknown, probably existing since before World War II. Not under the same name, of course. Its names, owners, and décor changed, but the café persisted. Until today. Vuglec is very important to Zagreb spirit. Pleasant staff, fine coffe, several tables outside, a few seats in a small space – many would say nothing special, just the place where locals drink. Oh, what a mistake! Vuglec is THE CAFÉ BAR! One and only. Vuglec is a kind of live museum or a time capsule of the timeless Zagreb atmosphere. A place where you can learn about events that have not yet happened, incredibly true stories, where you can meet authentic Zagreb citizens, people from various backgrounds, characters you might think have disappeared in the whirlwinds of the modern era, and much, much more. In short, London has the "Nag's Head" at Peckham from the "Only Fools and Horses" series, Americans have the "Cheers" café from the series of the same name, but those are still fictional places. Zagreb has Vuglec. A real place. Unadorned, relatively unobtrusive, unpretentious, yet... if you want to feel Zagreb, that's it. No lies, no deception, not fake. Vuglec is nothing, yet it's everything. Must see place. I gave it 4 stars for two reasons. To Zvijezda because it lacks the status of a square but should have it, and to Vuglec because it's spatially small instead of being on at least 3 floors, 300 square meters each. Or perhaps that's exactly how it should be? Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
