I was recommended this hotel by a local friend close to Zurich. Overall, my wife and I enjoyed our stay at the Sonnental hotel in Dubendorf, 15 min from Zurich, but the fact that the assigned basement room didn’t offer any view at all is less appealing. But -as my friend had indicated-the breakfast buffet was very satisfying with lots of delicious breads , a variety of local cheeses and smoked salmon, and with great service. What we also enjoyed was the location of the hotel and the beautiful road up the hill to reach Zurich. Along that road, you were able to sense some Swiss country charm (including farms with cows), some forest sections with trees in Fall colors, and the city of Zurich, all in the span of less than 15 min. The other big plus is that they just installed 3 level 2 EV chargers and those came in handy when driving an EV car. They should mention the availability of these EV chargers on the website as I usually skip hotels who don’t offer EV chargers. Regarding the basement room assignment which I didn’t know is what I had ‘paid for’, I must say that I usually get room upgrades at Marriott properties due to my lifetime Platinum status, so I noticed the difference in treatment when checking-in in the sense that when the hotel is not busy (which wasn’t the case in October), they don’t give you an upgraded room which they would certainly do at a Marriott property if you have a loyalty status; just a basic room for which you ‘paid for’. It’s those ‘fairly consistent’ ‘unexpected’ upgrades that make you become a very loyal customer over time as it doesn’t cost anything more to clean an upgraded room (which was available) versus a regular room (you paid for), but the customer’s satisfaction and life time memories go a long way. All in all, the basic room with fairly comfortable bed allowed us to sleep well, take a warm shower and get a nourishing breakfast and that was basically what we needed to start and finish the days we stayed in Zurich. Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3 Price per person: CHF 20–30
