The food at this quaint restaurant is out of this world! We started with home baked bread with amazing smoky flavours in the crust dipped into a simple delicate but flavourful beef broth. Our mains consisted of venison with a side of savoury cheese strudel (boiled) and duck with polenta & silver beet and a simple but delicious salad to share. The venison was tender, perfectly cooked and the flavours in the broth were amazing. The savoury strudel was so simple but a perfect accompaniment to the venison. The duck was perfectly pink in the middle and the polenta was the creamiest polenta I've ever eaten & again the broth served over it was full of flavour. Dessert was delicious, with two on offer we ordered one of each. Šmoren, a thick pancake cut up and pan fried with caramel and fruits of the forest sauce was tasty but a little too heavy after our meal. The other was the same cheese strudel that came with the venison but covered in sugar crystals and honey - I could honestly eat this everyday for the rest of my life. This is true farm to table food in a simple quaint setting, outdoor seating in summer and indoor in winter. I can't recommend it enough. I was born in Kranj, grew up in Melbourne, spent 10 years in Sydney and now live in NYC and this is by far one of the best meals I've eaten at a restaurant. If you visit, be sure not to choke on your locally grown wine when you ask for the bill. It was also one of the cheapest (high quality) meals we have eaten in some time. Well done Gostilna Lakner, I hope you get the recognition you deserve.
