Tonight I paid ā¬11 for a Bombay gin & tonic at The Shipyard Pub. What bothered me first was that there was no price list displayed at the bar where I ordered, nor was I shown one before ordering. When I questioned the ā¬11 price, I spoke directly with the manager. During that conversation, he justified the price by telling me that a bottle of Bombay gin costs him around ā¬70. I checked the price myself and found the same gin available for roughly ā¬36, so I questioned that explanation. Shortly afterwards, security told me I was ācausing troubleā and I was removed from the venue. To be clear: a bar is free to set its own prices. My problem is the combination of no visible price list at the bar, the explanation I was given when I questioned the price, and especially the way my complaint was handled afterwards. Instead of simply discussing the issue with a customer, the solution was apparently to have me removed. For me, the way a business handles a complaint says far more than the price of one drink.
