Had a great time at Pienza Coffee! For just 15 euros, we had a tour of their brewery, and tried their espresso, cream, and drip coffee. Very worth your time and money. Phillip and his team are very knowledgeable and shared all about the various coffee beans. Highly recommended for all coffee aficionados! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
Pienza Coffee is a roastery situated on the outskirts of Pienza. Using a combination of Arabica and Robusta beans, they specialize in espresso blends (which they distribute to many of the cafes/restaurants throughout the region). They also offer a few single origin coffees for those that want to do filter coffee / pour overs. The roasting of the beans here at Pienza Coffee takes place in a completely natural way as it did hundreds of years ago, using oak wood for slow roasting and then air cooling in a large hopper. This process preserves more of the aromas and produces espresso that yields more crema, a fuller flavor, and a smoother finish. For filter coffee, it provides a smoother and less acidic overall taste. You can sign up for a tour (for a small fee) and the owner will show you the entire roasting process. They only roast on certain days though, so call ahead to find out when their next roast day is. During the tour, I had a chance to weigh the beans, vacuum it into the roasting chamber, and witness/learn the roasting process. Once that was done, no tour would be complete without a tasting of the various espresso roasts as well as tasting their other product lines, such as their chocolate covered hazelnuts and spreadable dark chocolate creams. If you're in Montepulciano, they have a small shop on one of the main streets and you can stop by to buy beans or book a tour at the Pienza location.
