It’s hard for me to write this review, but I feel I owe it to the travel community and fellow readers to share my experience at this hotel. I book a lot of hotels—both for leisure and work—so I’m quite used to evaluating what advantages each hotel offers and how to get the most out of my stay. This time was no exception. We had planned a few days around Zermatt in a camping mood and weren’t even planning to book any hotels. But as a spontaneous surprise for my girlfriend, I decided to book one night at a hotel. Since the options available in Zermatt didn’t meet my expectations, I decided to drive a bit further out, thinking I could pay a little less for what I assumed would be more comfort and luxury. Hence, this choice. I spent 350 CHF—yes, 350 CHF—on what I believed would be a full-on spa and thermal paradise. I booked a suite, feeling proud and excited to surprise my girlfriend with something special. We were only going to spend around 20 hours at the hotel, so what we really wanted was a luxurious, comfortable room and access to a proper spa and thermal area. What we got was a hotel room straight out of the 1970s. The decor was horrible, there were two very cheaply built bathrooms (with no toiletries), two single beds, a fridge that looked like it hadn’t been replaced since the 80s, and outdated electronics that were at least 20 years old. There was absolutely no room service besides a single bottle of sparkling water, and overall the experience fell drastically short of the price point. Still, I remained hopeful. I thought maybe the service would improve with breakfast or access to the thermal area and spa. Guess what? No—it only got worse. Breakfast was completely average. Not great, not terrible, but definitely not worth the price. That left us with the thermal area, which, to my surprise, was only advertised at 30 CHF. So the high cost of the room clearly wasn’t coming from there either. To make matters worse, I was misled by the receptionist, who charged me 20 CHF extra for sauna access—even though they handed out a flyer advertising that same service for just 3 CHF. When I politely asked about the discrepancy, the receptionist simply replied, “You would pay more in Zermatt,” as if that justified anything. Overall, this was an experience to forget—and definitely not one I’d ever want to repeat.
