Breve visita alla biblioteca con la vasta sala lettura, la monumentale scalinata. Era presente una interessante esposizione di manoscritti dei secoli XV XVI in varie lingue. Le esposizioni cambiano . Informatevi sugli orari perché credo che tranne in luglio ci sia la sala lettura occupata. Alcuni giorni c'è una visita guidata

The National and University Library of Ljubljana (NUK) is one of the most emblematic buildings designed by architect Jože Plečnik, built between 1936 and 1941. This library is considered one of Plečnik's most important works in Slovenia. ### History and Architecture - **Location**: The library stands on the site of the old Palazzo Ducale, a 17th century Baroque building destroyed by the 1895 earthquake. - **Design**: The facade of the library combines brick and stone blocks, with archaeological inserts from the previous building. Plečnik took inspiration from Palazzo Zuccari in Rome for the exterior design. - **Architectural Features**: The main entrance is decorated with Pegasus heads on the door handles, symbolically guiding visitors into the "realm of knowledge". The interior features a monumental staircase with 32 columns of black Podpeč marble leading to the large reading room. This room is illuminated by glass walls that allow light to enter from two sides, creating a bright and functional study environment. ### Functions and Collections - **Special Collections**: The library houses a wide range of special collections, including medieval manuscripts, incunabula, Renaissance prints, a cartographic collection, audiovisual material and an image collection. - **National Role**: The NUK plays a central role in the conservation and access to the national collection (Slovenika) and participates in the creation of the supranational virtual library (E-library).
