We found ourselves near Virovitica recently for a funeral and, having arrived much earlier than expected, decided to stop here for lunch. Before visiting, I had read the handful of negative reviews. If anything, they made me even more curious. I often like to judge a restaurant on my own experience rather than someone else’s. We chose to sit inside by the window, as the dining room is non-smoking. The tables in the front resemble traditional café tables—small and round—while the main dining area is further towards the back. We asked if we could dine in the front instead, and our request was met with a smile. The waitress was warm, attentive, and genuinely accommodating. I have several dietary restrictions, and rather than treating them as an inconvenience, she took the time to guide me towards the best option for my needs. My husband ordered the Bečka šnicla (Wiener schnitzel) and couldn’t decide between the rizi-bizi and the sautéed potatoes with onions, both of which he enjoys. Without hesitation, the waitress suggested having half of each—a thoughtful touch that immediately set the tone for the meal. His plate also came with a simple cabbage salad dressed with oil and vinegar, the traditional Central European style rather than a creamy North American slaw. I chose the trout with a mixed seasonal salad. While we waited, the chef—who was introduced simply as “Chef”—came to our table, added a crisp white tablecloth, and joined another table to ours to create a more comfortable dining space. It was a small gesture, but one that instantly elevated the experience and demonstrated genuine attention to detail. A few minutes later, he returned carrying a small plate with slices of poppy seed roll and walnut roll. “Htio bih da probate okuse naših krajeva,” he said—“I’d like you to taste the flavours of our region.” It wasn’t an amuse-bouche in the classical sense, but it carried the same spirit: an unexpected expression of hospitality and local pride. It was a lovely gesture that genuinely impressed me. He stayed to chat for a few moments before the mains arrived. My husband’s schnitzel was accompanied by not two, but three side dishes, and my trout was cooked beautifully. The flesh was moist, delicate, and perfectly prepared—exactly how fresh trout should be. The presentation won’t be winning any contemporary plating awards, but that isn’t the point here. The food has an old-school charm that feels honest and unpretentious. The focus is clearly on generous portions, traditional flavours, and satisfying cooking rather than fashionable presentation—and I appreciated that. To finish, my husband enjoyed an espresso, providing a fitting end to an excellent lunch. When we went to pay at the bar—entirely by choice, as paying at the table was an option—I mentioned how often I’m disappointed by restaurants that overlook guests with dietary restrictions, particularly the lack of alternative milks and coffee substitutes. The owner simply replied, “Next time, just ask. Nothing is impossible.” That attitude says more about a restaurant than any menu ever could. Despite the few negative reviews I had read beforehand, my experience was overwhelmingly positive. It’s also worth mentioning the beautiful artwork displayed throughout the restaurant, which adds warmth and character to the space and is well worth taking the time to appreciate. Will I return? Absolutely. One excellent meal is encouraging; consistency is what defines a truly good restaurant.
