A bittersweet taste of what once was For those who have known Umag’s culinary scene for years, the name Lado carries a very special meaning. Not so long ago, Lado was the soul of a small seaside corner just 30 meters away on the pier, where he began as part of the local fishermen’s association. Every day, he would source the freshest possible seafood directly from the fishermen as they returned from the open sea. Guests would be treated to an ever-changing menu of grilled fish, shellfish, and other treasures — always as fresh as the morning catch. It wasn’t just a restaurant; it was a living link between the sea and the plate. But then came the intervention — or, should we say, the “efficiency” — of the municipal authorities and the mayor’s office. For reasons only they could explain, they moved Lado away from his prime location and stripped him of the ability to serve a full range of seafood dishes. The result? Today, “Lado” is only allowed to operate as a coffee shop. Yes, what remains is still good: his bakalar (salt cod) and inćuni (anchovies) are both excellent — full of flavor, prepared with the same care as always. But no matter how well-made they are, they cannot replace the magic of the old days when diners could savor freshly grilled fish just pulled from the Adriatic. The blame for this loss lies squarely with the city officials who, through their decisions, deprived Umag of one of its most authentic and unique gastronomic experiences. Locals remember.
