Dinner at Konoba BARE at Stari Grad, Hvar, Croatia. This dinner recommendation was from one of the Canadian couples whom we met the day before on our Hvar island boat trip. They went there earlier and was raving about the delicious grilled fish they had, and was choosing it from a plate from the chef. I was craving for really good grilled fish, so boy I was stoked. We had tried to go the day before, and called many times to make a reservation, but there was no answer and tried still but it was closed. We gave it another try the next day to call and make a reservation, and we were so lucky that he said yes! We pre-ordered seafood instead of meat, as I wanted to have really good grilled fish in Croatia. We arrived and we were the second of only two tables at his restaurant / house in Stari Grad, a beautiful old town in Hvar. That was how small the restaurant was. The meal turned out to be like an omakase Croatian style with the chef cooking and serving you what he made. There wasn’t really a menu! The chef started us with homemade aperitifs/grappas and lots of appetizers (grilled pumpkin from his garden, the sweetest I ever had, eggplant with cheese, ham and hard cheeses and some of the best black olives I ever had. Paired with the nicest bread (olive oil, salt, grilled over charcoal) I have ever had. Then came the mains, the grilled fish (sea bream and sea bass)with a potato salad and a tomato / feta cheese salad and topped with his own white and red wine. We rounded dessert with an opera cake and a berry tart with some dessert wine Prosek (made from Plavic Mali) grown, pressed and barreled by him. All the greens were grown by him in his own gardens, I even saw kiwi fruit grown from the trees for the first time (suaku me!). It was an experience and eating in his own home. And that’s what the chef who was in his 60s said, it’s for family and friends, and I cook whenever I want to with his beautiful and charming wife. He used to be a chef with his own restaurant in the main square for 20 years and now cooks whenever he wants to / has a reservation. What a life! And he used to play water polo as well (same as me)! He still swims in the afternoons and gardens in the morning. Boy we were stuffed! But we were so happy and full! It was for me the best meal I have ever in Croatia and possibly in my life and it was too expensive. We were more than happy to tip him even more. I hope to come back again one day. And will do so in heart best and this time as friends. Make your reservations and if you get one, go and have one of the best nights in your life. The best restaurant - the atmosphere, food and service was incredible! It felt so homely and welcoming, with fresh fish and no menu. It was such an experience and a must visit! Meal type: Dinner Price per person: €45–50 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
