A lottery-odds-against-it partnership has me posting to the Facebook page of EnjoyBar, in which I have never set foot. Because the day after Easter two things, impossibly, linked: a poem and a photograph. The photograph was taken in Alzano Lombardo--a wild gorgeous display of Easter-egg baskets that actually included chocolate hatched chicks. It was from my places-in-Italy page-a-day calendar (I’m translating the Divina Commedia) and the day after Easter turned out to be Alzano Lombardo Easter basket day. What my two grandboys got to do after Easter dinner because of this poem of mine about half an onion left for three weeks in the refrigerator for weeks is why my poem joined hands with the Easter-Basket photograph. The name of my poem is “How to Have Fun.” Now for the connection: the last word of every one of the six stanzas of “How to Have Fun” is--ENJOY! Now about six weeks ago, in humorous honor of my poem, my wife let an onion sit in the onion basket and sprout and sprout and sprout, until the green strands got to be almost three feet long! See, once your onion’s sprouted two green stalks that make it look like a ghost crab you take it outside and heave it into the ivy and feel somehow fulfilled. Really. So the grandkids, a week or so before Easter ask about this onion onion basket that’s shooting green stalks out. When I tell them, THEY want to throw THIS onion. Not now. Meanwhile a second onion gets some sprouting of its own going on. Then it’s Easter. And after Easter dinner comes what I’ve been waiting for. The boys come from the kitchen each holding his onion. Then I get to read my weird recipe to the gathered clan. Before I read--they are SO eager!--“Now don’t throw it until I say to!” It’s a complicated little poem, so I boil it down to five or so lines so they don’t have to wait forever. Now! Which is when those two sprouting onions get an Easter heave ho. enjoy enjoy enjoy enjoy enjoy enjoy. We return you now back to Italy, where it seems Alzano Lombardo has 15 best things to do. Which, OK, I check out. And there to my wondering eyes is . . . Enjoy Bar! I can’t believe my eyes. And so it is that I am here to tell what is surely by now an almost empty auditorium, just why, from Atlanta, I’m hanging out this evening in the wonderful Enjoy Bar. Everybody still here gets a favor. Or, if I were there, a drink on me. Terrill
