Notice how there's barely any reviews of this place on here? Maybe I checked into the wrong place, but I think it's more so that this place is a true trattoria, not a tourist trap! I stumbled onto this place while taking a walk towards punta carena, and brought my family here the next day for dinner, because I was tired of all of the 4.5 star TripAdvisor/Yelp/Facebook rated tourist traps I've been going to for the past 3 dinners!! I wanted some good food cooked by locals damn it! As the owner of a well known chain of restaurants in NYC and pampered by all the food options in NYC, I am pretty picky about what I eat. After walking 100m into the narrow alley street, you'll find a lemon orchard and a wooden house where the restaurant is. It was very quiet on the outside and I was worried it was closed, but upon reaching second floor, I heard diners and felt at ease. It's a casual, friendly, and what seemed to be a family operation. Now for the food. Our mixed seafood salad was well seasoned and tasty, simple dish. Things started looking up! Onto the pasta dishes, we got an eggplant and tomatoes fettucini, and a homemade short pasta with clams. Both were well seasoned, not overly salty like places that serve pasta from large batches, you can tell these dishes were cooked to order. The sauces in the pasta had a complexity that made it interesting to taste, unlike much of the flat tasting sauces in pastas we've been running into these few days. Eggplants were local and clams were fresh and tasty. Pasta was the right amount of al dente. We ordered a beef steak with balsamic vinegar sauce and mixed grilled vegetables as a second course. As soon as it hit the table, the aroma told me it was going to be good. Cutting into the meat, I was happy to find it juicy and cooked perfectly to medium rare. The meat was topped with shredded cured meat (panchetta? Bacon?) and the balsamic sauce was cooked with herbs and shallots and garlic, given it, again, a complex flavor. The grilled vegetables were seasoned well as well, as if each piece of carrot or eggplant or bell peppers were made with care ~ the chef took care in making every part of this dish, and the vegetables were not just filler pieces! And I usually hate carrots! Finally, after a delicious and simple lemon cream puff dessert, I caught Mamma Giovanna and the chef by the kitchen to extend my thanks. Always a good sign to see the proprietor and chef around! We were then escorted back with the shuttle van operated by one of the brothers to our hotel area. Very nice. This is probably the longest review I ever wrote, so you know it's gotta be good! I plan to recommend this place to my travel agent for his future clients...definitely not to be missed.
