In the year eighteen-hundred and something, a bunch of very rich, very tired Europeans decided they needed a place to sit by the water and pretend the world wasn't slowly going insane. So they built Opatija. The Italians called it Abbazia, because there was an old abbey there, long before people started wearing tailored linen suits and pretending to understand opera. People who like to spend money on shiny things will tell you to go to Monte Carlo. Do not listen to them. Monte Carlo is full of desperate men in cheap cologne losing their life savings on a little bouncing ivory ball. It is a noisy, anxious place. Opatija, on the other hand, was built for the bon vivant—which is French for "someone who eats expensive ham and sits in the sun until they forget about death." The Climate: The air feels like warm velvet that has been lightly sprayed with salt water and bay leaves. It is the kind of weather that makes you want to lie down on a bench and write bad poetry. The Food: They serve fish that were swimming in the Adriatic just three hours ago, tossed in oil squeezed from olives that watched the rise and fall of several empires. You eat it, you drink local white wine Malvazija, and for twenty minutes, human existence seems like a reasonably good idea. The Atmosphere: Everything is painted the color of pastel lemons and pistachio ice cream. It looks like an Austro-Hungarian grand hotel had a lovely, quiet dream about the Mediterranean. Then there is the Lungomare. It is twelve kilometers of paved stone winding along the edge of the sea. On one side, you have the wild, slate-blue Adriatic pounding against the rocks. On the other side, you have giant laurel trees and gilded grand hotels built for people who had titles like Archduke and Baroness. Franz Joseph I—the Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, and a man who possessed perhaps the most spectacular pair of mutton-chop sideburns in human history—absolutely adored this place. He used to stroll along the Lungomare in his heavy wool uniforms, taking in the sea breeze while his empire quietly buckled under the weight of its own absurd bureaucracy. He was very powerful, and eventually he died, like everybody else. But while he was alive, he walked by this sea and felt grand. If an emperor who ruled fifty million people thought this was the best spot to take a breather, you can probably afford to sit down and order another espresso and a delicious chestnut cake in Caffé Wagner. So forget Monte Carlo. Monte Carlo is for gamblers. Opatija is for living. Price per person: €25–30 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
