Batak Umag is barely a week old yet already behaves as if it has been here for years. There is an ease to the place that you don’t often see in new openings, especially in a town that spends winter looking faintly puzzled by its own existence. You walk in and the staff greet you with a natural warmth that feels unforced. They keep an eye on things without hovering, which is all anyone really wants. The food is a welcome surprise. New kitchens often need time to settle, but this one seems to have skipped the usual hiccups. Plates arrive tasting as though someone has prioritised flavour over decoration. It is simply good cooking that lets you relax into the meal instead of analysing it. The pricing is a small mercy in a town where summer restaurants often behave as if diners arrive by super yacht and pay in unmarked bearer bonds. Batak, by contrast, charges prices locals might actually recognise as reasonable. The fact that they are open at all in February is another quiet victory. It gives Umag a welcome sense of life at a time when most places have shut their shutters. If this is their first week, I’m curious to see what they look like once they’ve warmed up.
