Gostilna pri Cesarski lipi. Where the Prodigal Son Comes Home I couldn’t forgive myself if I didn’t write about Gostilna pri Cesarski lipi. If nothing else, for its stunning surroundings and atmosphere, and for its place in history as the setting of the film that shaped our grandmothers, mothers, and all of us .Moj ata, socialistični kulak. But to me, this belongs to a different film entirely. Not the one I just mentioned, but the one where every guest is welcomed as family where you feel like a son returning home after many years abroad, in a land across the sea, and finally understanding what it means to be home. I know people love Balkan ćevapčići and fried calamari, though personally I think of these more as habits than heritage and if we’re honest, never quite sit right with us. You won’t find them here. Here, you eat the way your grandmother cooked, a woman who never knew fried squid because the sea was simply too far away. And she refused to make ćevapčići, convinced it wasn’t real food for the stomach. Beef soup, roast meat, homemade rabbit, the occasional fried chicken, cabbage and beans and, as I call it, OMAS dessert. Go and try it yourselves; I won’t spoil the surprise. Every spoonful is a memory of the days when grandmothers cooked with love, raising their grandchildren into strong, capable people. Today, my friends and I simply wanted some peace, and settled on a charcuterie board itself a memory of grandmothers saying, “This is for you, so you grow up big and strong.” After several visits, I can say only this: from the very first time I walked in, I was welcomed the way that son is welcomed home in the film. Every guest receives a father’s greeting on arrival and a mother’s embrace on the way out. This isn’t just hospitality it’s love for the craft. From the outside, you can tell that from the early morning hours, through all the careful preparation, they live for those few hours to be the best they possibly can be for their guest or their lost son. Thank you to everyone standing behind this “gostilna” As I like to say: your guest or rather, your child will always loves to come home.
