Dropped in for morning coffee and brioche (croissant). We’d travelled from Como City by car and so, after the journey, we fancied a break before exploring Bergamo’s Old Town. Babilonia 1907 cafe bar is just fine for this. Coffee was good, English breakfast tea was fine as was the brioche, crostanta and gluten free cake. Price was reasonable. It’s well laid out, clean (the toilet is modern and spotless) and the interior decor is pleasing to the eye. However, this next bit is important. as you enter there is a sign explaining that it’s only table service and you should wait by the sign to be seated (in Italian and English). I think they do this to make best use of the available seating (they will move tables and chairs around as needed for larger groups). It makes sense. Sadly, this gets lost in translation and several customers just enter the cafe and take whatever table they fancy. It’s understandable especially if people don’t read Italian or English (we do and missed the sign anyway!). The hospitality staff are quite particular and will ask you to wait. Be polite, patient and go with it. It’s not personal but just another country and a different culture. Service is not the fastest but we were in no rush and they come to your table eventually - I observed that they have a system. When we paid (at the counter by taking your receipt which they give you at the table when your drinks are delivered) they were a bit distant and remote but, as is my way, I thanked them and explained that we had enjoyed it (which we had). This prompted a genuine smile from the cashier and the waiter behind him who had served us earlier. Proof, if needed, that the vast majority of humankind are good natured people who respond positively to a little sincere appreciation. I suspect it’s not an easy job with all of us visitors from around the world! As a stop for a coffee and cake, seems like a reasonable choice. We left refreshed for our exploration of Bergamo.
