Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen & Bar features a scratch kitchen run by a devoted executive chef, Eric Gabrynowicz, who has already won several awards for his bold culinary experiments and absolute dedication to the culinary arts. As you have already guessed from the restaurant’s name, it mostly serves Southern delicacies with a modern twist, such as cast iron pimento cheese dip or original honey dusted fried chicken. Chef Eric always makes sure to use only responsibly sourced seasonal ingredients.

For our recipe, you won’t need an oven because this time, with the knowledge of Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen & Bar team, we will explore a trendy mixology creation, Pumpkin Spiced Kentucky Mule. It is an ultimate drink for a cold season. This drink has been inspired by an all time classic–Moscow Mule. The original drink is a combination of vodka, spicy ginger beer, and lime served in a copper mug and garnished with two long thin cucumber slices that are supposed to look like the ears of a mule. Germans have taken this drink one step further by replacing vodka with spiced gin. In Asheville, the spirit has yet again been replaced, this time with bourbon, and a few seasonal notes have been added to the mix.

Cooking directions

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 oz bourbon
  • 1 oz Pumpkin Spice-Ginger syrup
  • 1/2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
  • 2 dashes of sassafras and sorghum bitters
  • soda water
  • nutmeg for garnish
  • 3 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 3/4 tsp clove
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 oz or 1/2 cup of packed freshly chopped ginger

Step 1. In a copper mug, combine the bourbon, syrup, fresh lime juice, and bitters. We don’t suggest you use aged, single-cask spirits because they are meant to be enjoyed pure, and adding so many other ingredients will not let you taste all the nuances of the bourbon.

Step 2. Stir the ingredients and add 1 shovel of crushed or cubed ice. Fill up with a splash of soda. Add a dash of nutmeg as garnish.

For the Pumpkin Spice-Ginger syrup

Step 1. With a thread, tie the cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove in a paper coffee filter bag.

Step 2. Add 1/3 cups water, sugar and ginger to a saucepan, dip the tied spices into the liquid, and bring to a boil.

Step 3. Keep stirring the liquid, until sugar has completely dissolved or for at least half an hour.

Step 4. Through a fine strainer, pour the syrup into a bottle. The ready syrup has a long shelf life and can be stored in a refrigerator.

Tip: Garnish your cocktail with a fresh mint twig and a lime wedge.
